When you see a yellow light on your Verizon router there's a problem with the service. Here are some steps you can take to address the issue:
Check for a Network Outages
- Using the My Verizon phone app, log into your account. Alternatively use an internet connection to log in via a web browser.
- Check the top of the screen for any pop-up service alerts. Verizon crews might be repairing a connection or doing scheduled maintenance. Or, there could have been damage to the network infrastructure from a storm or natural disaster.
- Open Chat and type “network outage” without quotes. On the app you can also use a voice assistant to say “network outage.”
- Press Enter. Follow the prompts to get more information about a possible outage or at least report that you have one.
Restart/Power Cycle the Verizon Router and ONT
- Unplug the power connection for both your router and your Optical Network Terminal.
- Wait 10 seconds and plug them back in. Wait for them to completely restart. This can often clear the issue.
Check if Your Router is Overheating
- Make sure your router isn’t crammed under an object or shoved in a tight corner. Ideally it should be uncovered where air circulates around it.
Check that your Cables are Connected and Undamaged
- Make sure each cable in your router and ONT is securely connected, including the ethernet cable into your router.
Update the Firmware
Log into your router’s web interface or mobile app and look for firmware updates. Download any you’ve missed. Firmware updates often are released to fix known issues and to update security protection.
Hard Reset the Router
- If the light is still yellow then it’s possible that the configuration of your router is preventing it from connecting to the network. This can happen if you make changes to the online settings of your router. You might need to perform a hard reset. This will return the router to its factory state and erase any personal changes. Those would need to be restored after a hard reset but if the problem persists it could be that the changes you made could be causing the issue.
If the problem persists, it's a good idea to contact Verizon's customer support for further assistance.
