The holiday season is upon us once again, and this year we've prepared a list of movies that you can enjoy streaming with your children. We've included classic favorites as well as some hidden gems for your viewing pleasure. Get the snacks and pillows ready. These films are available on-demand on major streaming services. Most classic Christmas movies can be seen on-demand with subscriptions to Disney+, Max, Netflix and Hulu. Or, via a cable TV on-demand feature. Alternatively, you can rent these moves on Amazon, Google Play, iTunes or Vudi.
- The Santa Clause (1994) - A comedy about a man who inadvertently makes Santa fall off of his roof on Christmas Eve and finds himself magically recruited to take his place. Produced by Hollywood Pictures and Outlaw Productions and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures.
- Arthur Christmas (2011) - An animated film that reveals the incredible, never-before-seen answer to every child's question: 'How does Santa deliver all those presents in one night?' Produced by Aardman Animations and Sony Pictures Animation and distributed by Columbia Pictures.
- Black Nativity (2013) This adaptation of the play by Langston Hughes follows a Baltimore teen, eponymously named Langston, who goes to New York City to spend the holiday with relatives Reverend Cornell Cobbs (Forest Whitaker) and wife Aretha (Angela Bassett). Music is a central character in this film. Langston is played by Jacob Latimore and Jennifer Hudson plays his Mom. The trip becomes an adventure with divine intervention.
- Home Alone (1990) - A classic comedy about an eight-year-old troublemaker who must protect his home from a pair of burglars when he is accidentally left home alone by his family during Christmas vacation. Produced by Hughes Entertainment and distributed by 20th Century Fox.
- Elf (2003) - A heartwarming comedy about Buddy, a human raised by Santa's elves, who travels to New York City to meet his biological father, spreading Christmas cheer in a world of cynics. Produced by New Line Cinema, Guy Walks Into a Bar Productions, and Gold/Miller Productions.
- The Polar Express (2004) - An animated adventure based on the beloved children's book by Chris Van Allsburg, about a young boy who takes a magical train ride to the North Pole on Christmas Eve. Produced by Castle Rock Entertainment, Shangri-La Entertainment, ImageMovers, and Playtone and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
- A Christmas Story (1983) - This film follows the wintry exploits of young Ralphie Parker, who spends most of his time dodging a bully and dreaming of his ideal Christmas gift, a "Red Ryder air rifle." Produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).
- How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) - A live-action adaptation of the classic Dr. Seuss story, with Jim Carrey starring as the reclusive green Grinch who plans to ruin Christmas for all of the citizens of Whoville. Produced by Imagine Entertainment and distributed by Universal Pictures
- Miracle on 34th Street (1947) - A heartwarming tale about a young girl who believes that the department store Santa might be the real true Santa Claus, leading to a court case to determine his authenticity. Produced by 20th Century Fox.
- Frosty the Snowman (1969) - An animated musical special about a snowman magically brought to life through a top hat, who must reach the North Pole to survive. Produced by Rankin/Bass Productions.
- The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) - A musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic Victorian tale, "A Christmas Carol," with Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge and the Muppets as various other characters. produced by Jim Henson Productions and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures.
- Holiday Affair (1949) is a classic Rom-Com directed and produced by Don Hartman with Robert Mitchum, Janet Leigh and Wendell Corey. The original is in black and white so let the kiddoes in on a secret that back in the olden days black and white movies were for grown-ups. The word “Affair” in the title does not refer to adult content so be assured this is family friendly for kids of about 7 and up. Connie, a war widow in New York City settles for her dependable but dispassionate boyfriend so she can provide a stable home for her six-year-old son, Timmy. She’s engaged to be married. A chance encounter with sales clerk Mitchum ensues and Timmy ends up leading his Mom on a holiday adventure.
- The Preacher’s Wife (1996) In this beautiful remake of the classic 1947 film, “The Bishop’s Wife,” Denzel Washington plays the angel who brings a married couple onto the same page via the beauty of the wife’ singing voice. The film is directed by American filmmaker Penny Marshall. Courtney B. Vance plays a Baptist preacher in New York City attempting to lift his struggling parish out of hardship. His wife is played by Whitney Houston and we dare you to take your eyes, and ears, from her screen presence. Knowing as we do now that Whitney Houston left this earth in 2012 this film becomes even more compelling.
