Starlink is a division of SpaceX, which is an American Company.

The Starlink satellite constellation is a network of linked low-orbit communications satellites that provide satellite internet service. Over 1,700 Starlink satellites have been launched, with a projected total of over 40,000. Supply chain challenges in sourcing silicon and manufacturing semiconductors have delayed the rollout of residential Starlink kits.

SpaceX and Starlink

Starlink was developed by SpaceX and is owned and operated by SpaceX. SpaceX is an American company headquartered in California. In addition to developing Starlink, SpaceX is known for its spacecraft manufacturing and space flight services. SpaceX was the first private company to take astronauts to the International Space Station.

SpaceX Awarded Subsidies for Starlink

In 2020, it was announced that the Federal Communications Commission had awarded SpaceX nearly $900 million in subsidies to expand broadband access to rural and remote internet customers in the United States. The Starlink constellation of satellites provides high-speed internet to remote regions. In early 2022, SpaceX reported having about 90,000 customers in over 20 countries.

Starlink Partners with Google and Microsoft

In spring 2021, the American tech company Google announced that it won a contract with SpaceX. Google will supply networking resources; Starlink will connect to cloud services by utilizing Google’s data centers and fiber-optic network. Starlink is also partnering with Microsoft, which is headquartered in Redmond, Washington, to provide Starlink internet to customer Azure cloud data centers.

When Starlink satellite and customer kit manufacturing ramps up, high speed internet access will be available across multiple locations. Currently, around 600,000 potential customers claimed spots on the wait list by pre-ordering service and kits.
