These instructions will disable Closed Captioning on DirecTV but after walking through the process you still see closed captions then they may be coming from another device like your cable set-top box or satellite box. You’ll have to disable the settings on those devices in such cases. But first try this:

To turn off Closed Captions while watching DirecTV, press the Info button on your DirecTV remote. You can enable or disable closed captions on the screen you are watching.

For a solution that turns off Closed Captions on DirecTV:

  • Turn on your TV and begin watching DirecTV

  • On your DirecTV remote press the MENU button

  • Choose: Settings

  • Choose: Display

  • Choose: Closed Caption and click on it.

  • Select: OFF to turn off closed captioning

  • SAVE your settings to apply the changes

    Turning off Closed Captioning won’t disable other accessibility features like audio descriptions or screen reading services.

    Did you know you can turn off Closed Captions just for certain channels? Go back to your DirecTV remote, Menu, Settings, Closed Caption, Custom. Select the channels on which you want to disable Closed Captions and Save.

    To keep Closed Captions but change how they appear, on your DirecTV remote select Menu, Settings, Closed Caption, Custom and adjust preferences for background, text size and color. Save your changes.

    Some live shows don’t’ have Closed Captions available.

    If you follow the steps on our DirecTV to remove Closed Captions and you still see them, you’ll have to turn them off on your set-top box. Turn on your TV, and have your TV box remote in hand. Hit Menu. Navigate down to Closed Captioning, then Disable. Hit OK and Save. If you have a Gemini Voice remote, hit the “B” button to bring up the accessibility settings menu
