While it is difficult to estimate the actual wait time for Starlink internet (it varies considerably), here’s the real answer – it could be years.

Why is there a waiting list?

If you have tried signing up for Starlink internet service, unless you were one of the lucky ones, you have discovered that you aren’t going to be able to get it yet. If you’re very lucky, you might only wait a matter of weeks, but if you’re unlucky, there’s no telling how long you’ll be waiting. The reason is that Starlink isn’t officially released yet. It is currently still in testing and is only available to customers as SpaceX increases the size of the test groups. And then, it is still only available on a first come, first served basis. If the area you live in is outside the coverage area or if SpaceX hasn’t increased the number of customers in your area yet, you will be put on a waiting list. How long you may have to wait depends on where you live, but there have been many reports of having to wait 2-3 years.

Should I wait for Starlink?

It depends. If you can afford to spend the money on something you may or may not get in a few years, then it won’t hurt if you want to put your name down. Of course, you will probably still want to be able to access the internet in the meantime. Either way, it’s good to remember that there are other good options out there. If you’ve been looking at Starlink, it might be because you live in a remote area without very many internet service providers. If that sounds like you, you may want to investigate other satellite internet providers like Viasat or HughesNet. They are widely available and don't have the long wait times you may get with Starlink.
