Is AT&T Next Up Anytime Still Worth It After Oct. 10?

Short answer: AT&T Next Up Anytime is still worth its $10 a month if you upgrade to a new Pro or Pro Max iPhone about once a year, you're on Premium 2.0 or Elite 2.0 and you keep your phone in good shape. It's a weaker deal than it was a week ago for everyone else. Under AT&T's updated offer terms taking effect Oct. 10, 2026, the top $1,200 credit tier needs a turn-in worth $230 or more (up from $180), the "any condition" iPhone trade-in rule goes away, and the no-trade-in monthly prices for the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max go up $5 a month. The current terms run through Thursday, Oct. 8.

Quick answer

  • Keep or add it if: you upgrade every 12 months, buy Pro or Pro Max models, are on Premium 2.0 or Elite 2.0, and your phone has no cracks or damage.
  • Skip it if: you keep phones two years or longer, you're on Value 2.0, or the phone you'd turn in is an older or damaged model.
  • Cost (as of Oct. 7, 2026): $10/mo per phone on top of your installment, or $120 a year. Trade-in bill credits never cover that $10.
  • What changes Oct. 10 (per AT&T offer details): $230+ turn-in for the $1,200 tier (was $180), no more any-condition iPhone 14+ trades, and higher no-trade-in monthly prices.
  • Deadline: Oct. 8 is the last day of the current terms. If you order on Oct. 9, confirm which terms apply before you check out.

How Next Up Anytime works (as of Oct. 7, 2026)

These terms are posted on AT&T's Next Up Anytime, phone-upgrade and support pages and were checked on Oct. 7, 2026:

  • Price: an optional $10/mo per phone, added to a 36-month, 0% APR AT&T Installment Plan. It doesn't count toward your phone balance.
  • When you can upgrade: after your first monthly payment, as long as you turn in your current phone. AT&T caps it at three upgrades in any 12-month period.
  • Deal eligibility: you qualify for AT&T's upgrade deals once you've paid off one-third of the phone. Without the feature, you have to pay the phone off in full first.
  • What gets waived: in AT&T's own example, a $1,199.99 phone at $33.34/mo, up to $799.99 of the remaining balance is waived if you upgrade within a year.
  • Enrollment and turn-in: add it within 14 days of buying the phone. The phone you turn in has to be in good working condition: it powers on and off, has no cracked or broken screen and still has its battery. If it isn't, you can be charged.
  • Older program: the original AT&T Next Up is closed to new customers.

What changes on Oct. 10, 2026

AT&T's updated offer terms taking effect Oct. 10 change two things that matter to Next Up Anytime customers: the turn-in value you need for each credit tier, and the monthly price of an iPhone 17-series phone when you don't trade anything in. The "through Oct. 8" thresholds below come from AT&T's posted promotion details dated Oct. 2, 2026. The "from Oct. 10" column is per AT&T offer details for the updated terms.

Credit tiers on an iPhone 18 Pro or 18 Pro Max upgrade

Credit (over 36 months)Through Oct. 8From Oct. 10Plans
Up to $1,200Any-condition iPhone 14 or newer (except 16e), or another phone worth $180+A turn-in worth $230 or morePremium 2.0, Elite 2.0, eligible legacy unlimited
Up to $930Any-condition iPhone 14 or newer (except 16e), or a phone worth $130–$179.99A turn-in worth $130–$229.99Extra 2.0, Unlimited Starter / Starter SL, eligible legacy plans
Up to $500Any-condition iPhone 14 or newer (except 16e), or a phone worth $130–$179.99A turn-in worth $130 or moreValue 2.0
Up to $350Any-condition iPhone, or a phone worth $35–$129.99A turn-in worth $35–$129.99Any eligible unlimited plan

Per AT&T offer details, the same thresholds apply to Next Up Anytime upgrades from Oct. 10, based on what the phone you turn in is worth after AT&T checks its condition. The iPhone 17e, iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus fall below the new $230 line and move to the middle tier. A one-year-old Pro or Pro Max in good condition is the kind of phone most likely to clear $230, but only AT&T's trade-in estimator can tell you what yours is worth. For a full model-by-model breakdown, see what your old iPhone is worth at AT&T now.

What the higher threshold can cost you

Here's what the new line means in practice. A phone that AT&T values between $180 and $229.99 qualifies for the $1,200 tier through Oct. 8. From Oct. 10 the same phone lands in the $930 tier, if your plan qualifies for it. That's $270 less in bill credits, or about $7.50 a month over the 36-month agreement. If you're on Premium 2.0 or Elite 2.0 with a phone in that range, check the credit AT&T shows at checkout before you order.

Our price check: no-trade-in monthly prices, before and after

We checked AT&T's phone pages on Oct. 7, 2026. The Oct. 10 prices are per AT&T's updated offer terms. Next Up Anytime customers pay the same tiered upgrade price as other upgrading customers, plus the $10 feature.

*On Oct. 7 we confirmed the base-storage upgrade prices on att.com ($5.99 for the 17e, $14.99 for the 17 Pro and $19.99 for the 17 Pro Max). Higher-storage upgrade prices are per AT&T offer details. Prices assume a 36-month, 0% APR installment agreement and an eligible plan, before taxes and the $35 upgrade fee.

New lines see a flat $5/mo increase on every model and storage size:

Phone (new line, no trade-in)Through Oct. 8From Oct. 10Change over 36 months
iPhone 17e 256GB$0.99/mo$5.99/mo+$180.00
iPhone 17e 512GB$6.99/mo$11.99/mo+$180.00

iPhone 17 Pro Max 2TB$32.99/mo$37.99/mo+$180.00

The "through Oct. 8" new-line prices match what att.com lists for retail-partner and business customers on Oct. 7. AT&T's online price is currently $5.56/mo lower because of an extra online bill credit. For example, the iPhone 17 Pro 256GB shows $4.43/mo online. AT&T hasn't said whether that online credit continues after Oct. 10.

What a year with Next Up Anytime costs

If you upgrade every 12 months, a year with the phone costs about the monthly price plus the $10 feature, times 12, before taxes and the $35 upgrade fee. That's because you've paid one-third of a 36-month plan by then, and the rest is waived when you turn the phone in. Using no-trade-in upgrade pricing:

Phone (base storage)12 months through Oct. 8 pricing12 months at Oct. 10 pricingDifference
iPhone 17e 256GB$191.88 ($5.99 + $10.00) × 12$215.88 ($7.99 + $10.00) × 12+$24.00
iPhone 17 Pro 256GB$299.88 ($14.99 + $10.00) × 12$359.88 ($19.99 + $10.00) × 12+$60.00
iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB$359.88 ($19.99 + $10.00) × 12$419.88 ($24.99 + $10.00) × 12+$60.00

Two things that table leaves out:

  • You give up the phone. With Next Up Anytime you hand the phone back instead of keeping or selling it. If you'd normally sell or trade in your one-year-old phone, its value is part of the price of the program.
  • The $10 is never credited. AT&T's offer details say promotional credits don't cover the Next Up Anytime fee, even on a $0-after-credits phone. Over three years that's $360 per phone.

Who should keep it, and who should drop it

Your situationOur take after Oct. 10
Annual upgrader, Pro or Pro Max, Premium 2.0 or Elite 2.0, phone in good conditionStill worth it. A recent Pro-model turn-in is the most likely to reach the $230 tier. Confirm with the estimator.
Annual upgrader on Extra 2.0Fine, but the best you can expect on an iPhone 18 Pro is the $930 tier. The $1,200 tier needs Premium 2.0 or higher.
Value 2.0 customerUsually not worth it. The top credit on Value 2.0 is $500, and the $10 feature eats into that.
You keep phones two years or moreDrop it. The $10/mo adds $240 over two years for a flexibility you won't use.
Your phone is cracked or damagedUpgrade by Oct. 8 if you can. After that, damage lowers the value AT&T assigns, and a damaged Next Up Anytime turn-in can lead to charges.

What to do before Oct. 8

  1. Check your upgrade eligibility and your phone's estimated trade-in value in your AT&T account or AT&T's trade-in estimator.
  2. If you're planning an iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max upgrade with an iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro or 17e, or with any damaged iPhone 14 or newer, the current any-condition terms favor ordering by Oct. 8.
  3. Check your plan. On AT&T's plans page, Extra 2.0 and Value 2.0 carry a warning that they may reduce your estimated trade-in value. Premium 2.0 is listed at $10 more per line than Extra 2.0.
  4. Send in your trade-in within 30 days. Credits start within three bills after the trade-in is processed.

Does any of this affect DIRECTV?

No. DIRECTV is a separate company from AT&T, so AT&T's phone offers don't change your TV service or price, and you don't need AT&T to get DIRECTV. See whether you can have DIRECTV without AT&T internet, or browse our DIRECTV guides.

Frequently asked questions

Is AT&T Next Up Anytime worth it in October 2026?

It's worth it for people who upgrade to a new Pro or Pro Max iPhone about every 12 months on Premium 2.0 or Elite 2.0 and keep their phone in good condition. For everyone else it's harder to justify after Oct. 10, 2026, when, per AT&T offer details, the $1,200 tier needs a turn-in worth $230 or more and no-trade-in monthly prices rise.

How much does Next Up Anytime cost?

As of Oct. 7, 2026, it's $10 a month per phone, added to a 36-month AT&T Installment Plan. That's $120 a year. The fee doesn't go toward your phone balance, and promotional bill credits don't cover it.

What changes on Oct. 10, 2026?

Per AT&T's updated offer terms taking effect Oct. 10, the any-condition iPhone 14+ trade-in rule ends, the $1,200 credit tier needs a turn-in worth $230 or more (up from $180), and no-trade-in monthly prices go up. Upgrades rise $5/mo on the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max and $2/mo on the iPhone 17e, and new-line prices rise $5/mo.

What's the last day for the current terms?

Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026. The updated terms take effect Saturday, Oct. 10. If you order on Oct. 9, confirm which terms apply before you check out.

What condition does my phone need to be in for Next Up Anytime?

The phone you turn in has to power on and off, have no cracked or broken screen and still have its battery. If it doesn't meet AT&T's condition rules, you can be charged.

Do I need AT&T wireless to get DIRECTV?

No. DIRECTV is a separate company from AT&T, and AT&T's phone offers don't affect DIRECTV pricing.
