What the series covers
TYSON is told in order, starting in Brownsville, Brooklyn, where Tyson grew up robbing other kids and landed in a juvenile detention center. A coach there, Bobby Stewart, introduced him to Cus D'Amato, who trained him until D'Amato's death in 1985. Tyson won the heavyweight title at 20, the youngest heavyweight champion in history, and reigned as undisputed champion from 1987 to 1990.
The later episodes cover his marriage to actor Robin Givens, his 1992 rape conviction and prison term (Tyson still denies the assault), the 1997 rematch in which he bit Evander Holyfield's ear, the death of his 4-year-old daughter Exodus, his drug use and recovery, and his 2024 fight against Jake Paul at age 58, which Netflix calls the most-streamed live sporting event of all time.
Besides Tyson, the series interviews former opponents Lennox Lewis and James "Buster" Douglas, his former manager Rory Holloway, childhood friends, his children and commentator Van Lathan. President Donald Trump also appears to defend him. Robin Givens and Desiree Washington, the woman Tyson was convicted of raping, don't appear; Givens declined an interview request.
A note on content
TYSON is rated TV-MA. It includes discussion of sexual assault, domestic abuse allegations and drug use, and some episodes end with a disclaimer and a link to resources for survivors of sexual violence. It isn't a good pick for younger viewers.
What critics are saying
Early reviews from the premiere day are mixed to negative. The Hollywood Reporter called the series "familiar and visually uninspired, yet still sporadically captivating," and said Tyson controls how far each conversation goes. The Guardian was much harsher, calling it "deeply icky" and one-sided, especially on the abuse allegations and his conviction. Both singled out the Trump interview.
