True Detective Season 5: Cast, Release Date and Where to Watch
True Detective Season 5 will star Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas, and HBO confirmed the casting on Friday, October 16, 2026. There’s no premiere date yet: HBO says production starts in 2027, which makes a 2028 debut more likely than a 2027 one. When it arrives, it will air on HBO and stream on HBO Max, like the first four seasons.

Who are Henry Logan and Rai García?
HBO has said the two leads are New York detectives, and that’s about all. Plot details and the rest of the cast haven’t been released. Like every True Detective season, it’s a standalone story, so you don’t need to watch earlier seasons first.
When will True Detective Season 5 come out?
HBO hasn’t set a date. Back in February 2025, HBO’s head of drama said the season would likely premiere in 2027, but the October 2026 announcement put the start of production in 2027. A season shot in 2027 usually needs months of post-production, so a 2028 premiere is the realistic expectation. We’ll update this page when HBO announces a date.
