Ziply Fiber is an internet service provider (ISP) that offers fiber-optic broadband services to residential and business customers. For a fiber optic internet connection, you would typically need an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) or Optical Network Unit (ONU) rather than the traditional modems used for DSL or cable connections.

An ONT is a device that serves as the interface between the fiber optic cable coming into your home and your internal home network. It converts the optical signals from the fiber into electrical signals that your devices can recognize. The ONT is typically installed on the side of your house or in your garage, but it can also be placed inside your home.

In fact, you won’t use a traditional modem with Ziply Fiber, and you don’t need to buy one. The ONT functions as the modem but in this type of connection certain additional modem functions are handled by the Ziply Wifi-6 router that includes a modem component of its own. Ziply will provide an Ethernet connection via the Optical Network Terminal and in this way Ziply handles firmware updates, security protocols and warranties that you might have had to handle when buying your own modem for DSL or cable connections. Your WiFI router will broadcast the Ziply signal wirelessly to other devices throughout your home. Ziply’s Fiber WiFi 6 Router is a great solution because it’s fast and robust. You can lease it as part of your service. However, if you choose to bring your own router for Ziply’s WiFi 6 signal, here’s a short list of compatible units. But it’s always a good idea to confirm directly with Ziply before you buy to ensure that the unit you are thinking about is still compatible.

You won’t need to buy a modem for your Ziply fiber optic internet connection but you can choose to buy your own WiFi 6 router instead of renting Ziply’s router. For some customers the added control is important. Ziply is flexible and can accommodate your own compatible device if that’s your preference.
