What Crown of Deceit is about
Miss USA and Miss Universe have long sold a picture of beauty, ambition and opportunity. TLC's series looks at the history of controversy, internal conflict and legal disputes behind that picture, using interviews with former contestants, pageant insiders and whistleblowers along with behind-the-scenes access. TLC says the documentary examines allegations of misconduct, abuse of power, favoritism and competition rigging, along with claims of intimidation, secret NDAs and leadership failures.
Former contestants in the series include Taylor Hale, who was Miss Michigan 2021 and competed for Miss USA, Noelia Voigt, Miss USA 2023, and Brittany Mason, Miss Indiana 2008 and a Miss USA contestant. They talk about contestant safety, financial pressure, ownership disputes and turmoil in the organization's leadership.
The story builds to Miss Universe 2025 in Thailand, where TLC says a public confrontation led to a contestant walkout and a judge resigned before the finals, alleging the finalists had been picked in advance. Secret audio recordings and other controversies raised more questions about the organization. TLC says the series also focuses on the people behind the headlines and the personal cost of chasing a dream inside an institution in crisis.
