How to Cancel DIRECTV Service After a Loved One Dies
By American TV editorial team |
We’re sorry for your loss. If you need to close a loved one’s DIRECTV account, start with DIRECTV’s cancellation support at 800-531-5000. Tell the representative the account holder has died and ask how an authorized representative should proceed. Our DIRECTV cancellation guide explains the ordinary process.
Keep our equipment return guide handy. For other household accounts, see switching or canceling internet and cable service.
Before contacting DIRECTV
Locate a recent bill, account number, service address and a list of equipment. Write down your relationship to the account holder and whether you are handling the estate. Ask the agent which documents are required and how to submit them securely before sending a death certificate or estate paperwork. Do not assume that having a password gives you authority to change the account.
Ask about cancellation or keeping service
Explain whether the household wants to cancel or whether a surviving household member wants service in their own name. Ask what options are available, what authorization is needed and whether a new agreement would apply. We have not found a published DIRECTV procedure specifically for deceased account holders; a transfer or fee waiver should not be assumed.
DIRECTV’s ordinary process allows customers with internet-delivered service and no satellite dish to sign in and select Cancel service. For an account belonging to someone who has died, ask support how the authorized representative should handle it. Request a confirmation number and the effective cancellation date.
Equipment and final charges
DIRECTV says required equipment returns vary by account and it prepays return shipping. Outside equipment, including the dish, and cords and cables can be kept. Ask for the exact return list, deadline and instructions; retain your shipping receipt and tracking number.
Under DIRECTV’s ordinary terms, cancellation generally takes effect at the end of the billing cycle, without a partial-period refund except where prohibited by law. A remaining contract can carry a fee. Ask whether any exception applies after a death and obtain the answer in writing. Confirm the final balance and what will happen to automatic payments rather than treating a stopped payment as cancellation.
Keep a record for the estate
Save the confirmation, final bill, equipment receipts and any correspondence together. Ask the person handling the estate to review payment questions. Check statements for separately billed streaming subscriptions and contact each provider through its own cancellation process.
