The New Fire TV Stick 4K Runs Vega OS: What It Means for the DIRECTV App
Amazon's new Fire TV Stick 4K costs $59.99 and adds Wi-Fi 6 and a redesigned remote with a programmable button. The bigger change is under the hood. It runs Vega OS, Amazon's new operating system, instead of the Android-based Fire OS. On Vega you can only install apps from the Amazon Appstore. Sideloading is gone, and some apps haven't been rebuilt for Vega yet. Reviewers found the Shudder app missing on October 9, 2026, for example.
If you watch DIRECTV on a Fire TV, here's how to avoid a surprise.
DIRECTV support on Vega: check the exact model
DIRECTV’s supported-device list explicitly includes the Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025) running Vega OS 1.1 or higher. That confirms DIRECTV support on that Vega model. The list does not explicitly name the new 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K, so confirm compatibility for that exact device before buying.
- On the Amazon product page or in the Appstore, search for the DIRECTV app and confirm it's listed as compatible with the new Fire TV Stick 4K.
- Check the other apps you use daily, such as Netflix, Max, Peacock and your team's app.
- If an app you need isn't on Vega yet, buy an older Fire OS model while it's still sold, or use a DIRECTV Gemini device instead.
Amazon says Vega will power all new Fire TV devices from now on, so this isn't just about one stick.

Fire TV Stick or DIRECTV Gemini?
DIRECTV's Gemini devices run Google TV, with the DIRECTV guide built in and the Google Play app store. That means apps that haven't reached Vega yet are usually there. DIRECTV has also offered a Gemini Air at no cost to new customers. We compare the two in Gemini Air vs. Amazon Fire TV and walk through Gemini Air setup.
Choose the new Fire TV Stick 4K if you're already set on Alexa and your apps are in the Vega Appstore. Choose Gemini if DIRECTV is your main service and you want one remote and one guide. Questions about which device comes with your package? Call 1-855-690-9884.
