Yes, you get a modem/router combined device with your monthly Kinetic Internet plan from Windstream. The modem/router is called Kinetic Gateway and it rents for as low as $5.99/mo.
The Kinetic Gateway is a high-speed DSL modem with a one-port 10/100 Mbps NAT router for hardwired connection for seamless browsing and streaming. It also has IP QoS features that allow you to more efficiently control your internet traffic so that your bandwidth is focused where you want it.
Depending on your Windstream Kinetic Internet plan type you will be offered equipment rental of the specific routers, DSL routers, or cable modems needed for your service for around $8.99/month. You can also use your own modem/router as long as it's compatible with your plan. Rented equipment needs to be returned to Windstream if you cancel service, but one great feature of rented equipment is that maintenance and upgrades are handled by Windstream.
Note that fiber optic internet plans from Windstream Kinetic do not require a modem but do require a fiber-capacity router. Rather than a modem, fiber-optic installations include an optical network terminal (ONT) at each endpoint. The ONT converts optical signals to standard Ethernet signals. Some ONT devices have an Ethernet output for you to connect the ONT Ethernet port to the WAN port on your router.
Fiber gateways replace traditional ADSL gateways. Not only do they provide Gigabit full duplex bandwidth capacity, but they also include telephone lines, a router, and a WiFi access point for seamless local area networking.
