Arctic Slope Telephone Association Cooperative (ASTA) is a telecommunications company owned by Alaska Natives, providing internet, voice, and satellite services to over 20,000 members in urban, rural, and remote areas of Alaska, as well as the Arctic. The company was founded in 1960, when seven Alaska Native villages worked together to build their own local telephone exchange. This spawned the first rural telephone company in Alaska, leading to the establishment of Arctic Slope Telephone Association, Inc. ASTA’s internet services include broadband cable, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), and a satellite-based Internet service that delivers broadband access to hard-to-reach and remote areas. ASTA operates more than 15,000 miles of fiber and coaxial cables connecting northern Alaska to the world. ASTA focuses on reliability and customer service. They offer a variety of internet plans, including pre-pay and post-pay, from 1 mbps to 25 mbps download speeds. All of their plans offer unlimited data usage and no long-term contracts. Their services cover all of the Arctic, from the Bering Straits in the west to the Canadian border in the east. They also provide service to remote rural individual service areas, including the Above Arctic Circle area (North Slope, Northwest Arctic and Nome coastal area), South and East Central Interior, Southwest Interior and Southeast Alaska.
